Frequently Asked Personal Income Tax Questions

Who should hire a professional to prepare their tax return?

A professional tax preparer isn’t just for people with complicated tax situations. Many Canadians choose to work with a tax professional because they value convenience, accuracy, and peace of mind. Whether you’re employed, self-employed, retired, investing, raising a family, or simply don’t want the stress of preparing your own return, professional tax services can save you time and reduce uncertainty.

At Switzer & Co., our family has been helping individuals, families, and business owners with their tax needs for generations. We don’t just prepare your return during tax season; we’re here year-round to answer questions and provide guidance as life’s changes impact your taxes.

Should I us AI to do my taxes?

AI tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Claude can be helpful for understanding tax concepts and generating questions to ask your tax professional. However, AI does not have access to your complete financial situation and should not replace professional tax advice. As tax legistlation can change from year-to-year it is important that you make sure when asking AI tax related questions that it is retreiving it from reliable sources, such as directly from CRA and that the information provided is relavant to the tax year in question.

We often tell clients that AI is a great starting point for learning, but when it comes to filing your return and making important life or tax decisions, personalized advice from a qualified tax professional is still essential.

How can I reduce my tax bill?

There are many legitimate ways to reduce the amount of tax you pay, including RRSP contributions, FHSA contributions, eligible tax credits, charitable donations, medical expenses, child care expenses, and other tax-saving strategies. Every tax situation is unique and should work with your personal lifestyle, not what your neighbor is doing. Our team can help identify opportunities that apply to your circumstances.

What deductions and tax credits can I claim?

The deductions and credits available to you depend on your personal situation. Common claims include medical expenses, charitable donations, child care expenses, tuition amounts, disability tax credits, moving expenses, and employment expenses. We review your situation carefully to ensure you receive every deduction and credit you’re entitled to claim.

Do I need to file a tax return if I have little or no income?

In many cases, yes. Filing a tax return helps ensure you receive government benefits and credits such as the Canada Child Benefit (CCB), GST/HST Credit, Climate Action Incentive payments, and other income-tested benefits. Even if no tax is owing, filing can be beneficial.

What documents do I need to provide for my tax return?

Most taxpayers will need income slips such as T4s, T5s, T3s, pension slips, investment statements, and receipts for deductions or credits they plan to claim. If you’re unsure what documents are required, our team will guide you through the process and provide a checklist tailored to your situation.

How do major life changes affect my taxes?

Life events often have important tax implications. Getting married, separating, having children, buying a home, changing careers, starting a business, retiring, or receiving an inheritance can all affect your taxes and government benefits. We help you understand the tax consequences of life’s milestones and plan accordingly.

What happens if I owe money to the CRA?

If you owe taxes, it’s important to file your return on time, even if you can’t pay the balance immediately. Filing late can result in penalties and interest. The longer you neglect filing the more the interest and penalties will add up. We can help you understand your options, including payment arrangements with the CRA, and provide guidance on the best course of action.

What should I do if the CRA contacts me?

Receiving a letter, review request, phone call, or audit notice from the CRA can feel overwhelming. As your authorized representative, Switzer & Co. can communicate directly with the CRA on your behalf, help gather the required information, and guide you through the process with confidence.

We also encourage our clients to contact us whenever they receive unexpected communication that appears to be from the CRA. Before providing personal information, making a payment, or responding to a request, we can help verify activity on your CRA account and determine whether the communication is legitimate. With tax scams becoming increasingly sophisticated, an extra layer of verification can help protect you from fraud and provide peace of mind.

Our goal is to ensure you never have to navigate CRA correspondence alone. Whether it’s a simple question, a review request, or a more complex tax matter, we’re here to help every step of the way.

Do I need to report self-employment, side hustle or rental income?

Yes. All income earned from self-employment, freelance work, online businesses, investments, and rental properties must generally be reported on your tax return. We help ensure that all income is properly reported while maximizing eligible business and rental deductions.

How can I maximize my tax refund?

While it’s natural to want the largest refund possible, we believe tax planning should start with your life goals, not your tax return. A tax refund is often the result of decisions you’ve already made throughout the year, so the real opportunity lies in making financial choices that support the life you want to live and then structuring those decisions as tax-efficiently as possible.

At Switzer & Co., we encourage our clients to focus on building an authentic, fulfilling life first, whether that’s studying for their dream career, starting a business, raising a family, purchasing a home, investing for the future, or pursuing a passion. From there, we help identify tax credits, deductions, and planning opportunities that align with those goals.

After all, prioritizing tax savings at the expense of your quality of life can sometimes create what many refer to as “golden handcuffs”: staying in situations, jobs, investments, or lifestyles that no longer serve you simply because of the perceived tax advantages. Our goal is to help you make decisions that are right for you, while ensuring you don’t pay more tax than necessary.

By combining proactive planning with accurate tax preparation, we help our clients create financial strategies that support both their personal goals and their long-term financial well-being.

Why Choose Switzer & Co.?

For generations, our family has proudly served individuals, families, and business owners throughout Canada. We combine professional expertise with personalized service, helping our clients navigate tax season with confidence and providing year-round support whenever tax questions arise. When you work with Switzer & Co., you gain more than a tax preparer, you gain a trusted advisor.
